What is MCUG?
MCUG (micturating cystourethrography) also known as VCUG (voiding cystourethrography) is a special type of X-ray that gives information about the urinary tract specially the bladder. It may be needed in following conditions
- Detection of vesico-ureteric reflux (VUR) in children
- When obstruction to flow of urine is suspected like PUV (posterior urethral valves)
- Congenital anomalies of urinary tract
- Neurogenic bladder
What is the procedure of MCUG?
The test is performed in radiology department with prior appointment. After cleaning the area, under all aseptic precautions a long thin tube called catheter is inserted into the bladder and the bladder is filled with a radiopaque dye. After removing the tube x-ray images are taken while the child is passing urine. It gives us detailed information about the structure of
Is the procedure painful?
There may be some discomfort due to the catheter. The catheter is lubricated with local anesthetic jelly to ensure smooth passage. Usually no sedation or medications for pain control are needed.
Is there any risk of UTI due to this procedure?
The risk is very small. Your doctor will usually prescribe an antibiotic to be started on the morning of the test and continued for 48 hours after the test to prevent UTI. All sterile precautions are taken during the procedure.
If your child already has UTI, the test can be done only after UTI has been treated with antibiotics.
What precautions are needed after the test?
Ensure good oral liquid intake to maintain good urine output. Remember to continue antibiotics for 48 hours after the test or as advised by your doctor.
