What is a DTPA scan?

A DTPA (Diethylene-triamine Pentaacetic acid) gives information about

  • Any abnormalities in perfusion (blood supply) and drainage of both kidneys
  • Possible site of obstruction to the drainage
  • Functioning of individual kidney

Similar information can be obtained with MAG-3 and LLEC scans.

How much time will it take to complete a DTPA scan?

Imaging takes 30-60 mins generally. If there is an obstruction to drainage delayed images up to 4 hrs, 6 hrs or more may be needed.
