What is ultrasonography of kidneys and what information does it provide?
Ultrasonography is imaging of body organs using sound waves. It is a painless investigation and doesn’t involve any radiation. Ultrasound kidneys, ureters and bladder (KUB) is ordered when some kidney problem is suspected. Ultrasound KUB provides information about:
- Kidney sizes
- Any swelling in the urinary tract e.g. antenatal hydronephrosis
- Congenital renal anomalies
- Complications of UTI
- Renal stones
- Renal Doppler to assess blood flow in renal vessels
What preparation is required before ultrasound KUB?
Usually no specific preparation is required. Sometime a child needs to be empty stomach for few hours before ultrasound. A full bladder may be required for additional information. Your doctor will give you specific instructions.
